An existing car repair garage in Spain sells via traspaso for about €59,000 on average: half of 2026 listings ranged from €45,000 to €81,000.

Opening a mechanical workshop from scratch costs €30,000–75,000, a body and paint shop €65,000–155,000.

The sector’s average margin is about 6%, and payback takes 3–5 years, usually with an owner who works as a mechanic.

Below: what it costs to open or buy a garage, the rules that apply to workshops, what you need for the licence and waste, what a garage earns and what to check when buying. The page includes a payback calculator with an illustrative workshop.

The car repair market in Spain

Spain has 40,000–46,000 workshops: 46,426 according to the CONEPA association, more than half of them sole traders and workshops with 1–2 employees.

Sector revenue in 2023 was €15.55bn: 62% mechanics and electrics, 25% bodywork and paint, 13% tyres.

Demand rests on an ageing fleet: the average passenger car in Spain is 14.6 years old, and 12.9 million cars are over 15.

Electrified vehicles are 2.4% of the fleet, though their number grows by 51% a year.

Work volume barely grows — the average ticket does: in the first half of 2023 the average repair order was €323.71, 8% more than a year earlier.

Margins are thin. According to CONEPA’s White Paper, the average margin is 6.3% in mechanics, 5.2% in bodywork and 4.7% in tyres.

The industry complains that a mechanic’s hour costs more than it sells for: CONEPA estimates workshops lose €13.62 on every hour of mechanical work and make their money on parts.

What an existing garage costs

We reviewed 46 traspaso listings for passenger-car workshops with a stated price (Wallapop, October 2026).

The median is about €59,000, half fall between €45,000 and €81,000, and the full range is €15,000 to €160,000. Median rent in these listings is about €4.40 per m² a month.

Where Area Monthly rent Traspaso
Valencia 230 m² €615 €43,000
Alicante, Rabasa 380 m² €1,200 + VAT €63,000
Madrid, Marqués de Vadillo 120 m² €1,300 €47,500
Barcelona, Eixample 200 m² €1,320 €53,000
Manresa 500 m² €1,700 €80,000–99,000
Pocomaco industrial estate, A Coruña, body and paint 600 m² €1,500 €120,000
Sant Adrià de Besòs 500 m² €1,900 €130,000

The price usually includes 2–5 lifts, 1–3 diagnostic scanners, an air-conditioning station, tyre fitting and balancing, sometimes a wheel-alignment rig and a paint booth, plus a “customer base” and insurer agreements for body shops.

Almost no listing states revenue as a number — just “good, provable turnover”.

At least seven listings ask €1: the owner is retiring and hands over equipment and customers to whoever takes on the lease.

That is an opportunity, but such a workshop’s customers are loyal to the owner-mechanic and leave with them unless you agree a handover period of working together.

What it costs to open a garage from scratch

According to franchise brokers (an interested source), a general mechanical workshop costs €30,500–74,000 and a specialist one — bodywork, paint, electric vehicles — €65,000–155,000.

Premises refit €8,000–20,000, lifts from €5,000–12,000, diagnostics €6,000–15,000, opening parts stock €5,000–10,000.

Preparing for electric-vehicle repair adds €10,000–25,000 for training and equipment.

Franchises cost more but bring customer flow and purchasing:

  • Midas — entry fee €0–18,000, royalty 5% of sales (3% in year one), marketing 4.5%, budget up to €250,000, premises from 100 m².
  • Feu Vert — budget from €100,000, royalty up to 4.5%, marketing 2.5%.
  • Euromaster — centres from €180,000, terms not disclosed.
  • Bosch Car Service — about 600 workshops; not a franchise but a network of independents.

Paintwork sharply raises the entry bar: you need a booth, an environmental licence and emissions control.

That is why an existing body shop with a booth is the strongest argument for buying rather than opening.

The rules that apply to workshops

Workshops are governed by Real Decreto 1457/1986 — still in force, last amended in 2020. The essentials:

  • Opening. Before starting, the workshop files a declaration with the region stating its trades; the data goes to the industrial register (Registro Integrado Industrial); installation projects and the equipment report are kept on site for inspection. In Madrid the declaration fee is €55.
  • Trades. There are six: mechanics, electrics and electronics, bodywork, paint, motorcycles and specialist work. Working in a trade not in the declaration is a breach; changes are notified within a month.
  • Estimate. The customer is entitled to a written estimate valid for at least 12 working days; hidden defects must be reported within 48 hours and repaired only with the customer’s consent.
  • Warranty. 3 months or 2,000 km for cars, 15 days or 2,000 km for commercial vehicles.
  • Qualifications. National law does not require the owner or a technical manager to hold a qualification; the Valencian Community abolished that role in 2012, while Andalusia and Catalonia keep it in regional rules.

Reform is under discussion: in July 2026 workshop associations sent the ministry a draft new decree covering mobile workshops, electronic documents and the right to hold a car until paid. It is still a draft.

Licence, waste and paintwork

  • Activity licence. The licence exemption for premises up to 750 m² under Ley 12/2012 does not cover car repair: heading 691.2 is not in the law’s annex. English-language guides often say otherwise — that is a mistake.
  • Valencian Community. A workshop with paintwork needs an environmental licence with a technical project (Ley 6/2014, Annex II, item 13.4.5); an ordinary mechanical workshop with lifts and a compressor usually files an environmental declaration.
  • Andalusia. Workshops up to 250 m² go through environmental qualification (Calificación Ambiental) under the GICA law.
  • Hazardous waste. Before starting, the workshop notifies the region as a hazardous-waste producer, whatever the volume; waste may be stored on site for no more than 6 months and handed only to an authorised processor; mandatory insurance applies only from 10 tonnes a year (Ley 7/2022).
  • Paint. Above 0.5 tonnes of solvent a year, emission limits for volatile organic compounds apply (RD 117/2003).

What a garage earns

  • Hourly rate. €42.95 in bodywork (Solera and CONEPA, Q1 2025), about €40 across the sector: from €25–30 at small multi-brand workshops to €80–90 at premium-brand dealers. The average body repair is €1,517.
  • Revenue. A small multi-brand workshop takes €150,000–300,000 a year. The sector averages about €109,000 of revenue per employee.
  • Staff. Under the Alicante metal-industry collective agreement, a first-grade mechanic earned about €19,000–21,000 gross in 2025; under Málaga’s automotive agreement, €22,140 (2025). Add about 30% employer contributions.
  • Margin. The sector average is 6.3% in mechanics (CONEPA). Franchise brokers promise 10–20% — the difference is largely whether the owner pays themselves a mechanic’s wage.

Garage payback calculator

The calculator holds an illustrative mechanical workshop: a €59,000 traspaso plus €20,000 to update equipment.

Revenue is €15,000 a month excluding VAT (€180,000 a year), parts and consumables 35% of revenue, two mechanics €4,400 a month, rent for 300 m² €1,320 a month, other costs (energy, waste collection, insurance, diagnostic subscriptions, accountant) €1,500 a month.

Pre-tax profit is €30,360 a year, about €24,600 after tax, and the €79,000 investment pays back in about 3.2 years.

In the model the owner works as a mechanic without a salary — which is why the margin beats the sector average.

If the owner only manages and hires a third mechanic, profit all but disappears: that is the average 6% margin. Break-even is about €11,100 of revenue a month.

Take revenue from bank statements, the job-card system and VAT returns (modelo 303), not from the seller’s word.

For how sellers justify a price, see How to value a business for sale; to assess an investment once timing is considered, see IRR (internal rate of return).

What to check when buying an existing garage

  1. Trades in the register. The industrial register number and the list of trades must match the work done. A paint booth registered only for “mechanics and electrics” is a red flag.
  2. Activity licence. For this activity and this address, with the environmental regime if there is paintwork. The new owner files a declaration in their own name.
  3. Soil and waste. The polluter is liable for contaminated soil, and after them the owner and the occupier of the site (Ley 7/2022, art. 100). Check records of waste handed to processors in recent years, underground tanks and, where required, the preliminary soil report (RD 9/2005).
  4. The lease. A business tenant may assign the lease without the landlord’s consent, but the landlord may raise the rent by 20%, and must be notified within a month (art. 32 LAU); the lease may prohibit assignment.
  5. The numbers. Monthly revenue for 2–3 years from statements, the job-card system and VAT returns. “Good, provable turnover” without documents is not turnover.
  6. Debts and staff. The buyer is liable for the seller’s tax debts (art. 42.1.c LGT) unless they obtain a tax-debt certificate before the deal (art. 175.2 LGT); for Social Security debts (arts. 142.1 and 168.2 LGSS); mechanics transfer with all their rights, and seller and buyer are jointly liable for wage debts for 3 years (art. 44 ET).
  7. Customers. If the workshop depends on the seller-mechanic, agree a handover period working together and price in customer loss.

How an existing business is checked before you pay a deposit is described on our traspaso audit page; if you are buying the owning company, you need full due diligence.

Frequently asked questions

How much does it cost to open a car repair garage in Spain?

A mechanical workshop costs €30,500–74,000, a body or specialist shop €65,000–155,000, a franchise €50,000–250,000. An existing garage via traspaso averages about €59,000.

Do you need a licence for a garage in Spain?

Yes: a declaration to the region with industrial-register entry, and a licence or environmental declaration from the town hall. The exemption for premises up to 750 m² does not apply to workshops. Separately, you notify the region that you produce hazardous waste.

Do you need a mechanic’s qualification to open a garage?

Not under national law: the state decree does not require the owner to be qualified. Andalusia and Catalonia provide for a technical manager in regional rules; the Valencian Community abolished the role in 2012.

How much does a garage make in Spain?

A small multi-brand workshop takes €150,000–300,000 of revenue a year. The sector’s average margin is 6.3% in mechanics. An owner who works as a mechanic keeps noticeably more — much of it is effectively their wage.

What warranty applies to repairs in Spain?

3 months or 2,000 km for cars and 15 days or 2,000 km for commercial vehicles, whichever comes first. If a part has a longer warranty, that applies. The workshop’s warranty does not cover parts supplied by the customer.

What is the payback period for a garage?

About 3–5 years according to the networks; in the illustrative calculation with €180,000 of revenue and a working owner, about 3.2 years. Without a working owner, a workshop takes much longer to pay back.
